I build work based on my observations and immersion in the systems of landscape by walking, looking, and collecting detritus. The encounter plays a fundamental role in my work taking me out of the studio and into the terrain where experiences combine with substance through time and space. I absorb the changes of light, smells, and sounds day after day. By situating myself as a part of a system my understanding of place becomes interactive. Active engagement moves my perception of landscape as a scenic vista to a larger ecological understanding of place.
Landscape is not a genre of art but a medium. WJT Mitchell
